Basil… a little secret!
Basil… the herb that is!
As you know, Sage and myself are on the lookout for things that are inexpensive, simple to do and enjoyable AND bring healthy wellbeing to your finger tips!
If BASIL is something you love, we hope you have fun with this!
A little about Basil…
As well as loving the flavour Basil brings to many recipes we and Mrs Sprout love to cook, research reveals that Basil is rich in antioxidants; vitamin A, vitamin K, vitamin C, magnesium, iron, potassium, and calcium
and aids in reducing inflammation and swelling, has anti ageing properties!
Well that makes it even more worthwhile!
The dilemma we face…
When we buy our basil – and it’s left in the fridge it seems to wilt and discolour before we get maximum use out of it!
We often try to grow our basil from small plants often without success…
so when we heard that basil was a vegetable that REGROWS itself, we got really excited!
It means we can have a constant supply on the go!
Here’s one way of having a constant supply.
- Place basil clippings with 7.5-10cm stems in a glass of water.
- Change the water regularly so they don’t get slimy.
- When the roots are 5 cm long, transfer to a pot with soil and enjoy your basil plant grows!
We love seeing our little basil stems sitting in water on our kitchen bench – it adds greenery to the kitchen and smells amazing ALL YEAR ROUND!!!
While not all our basil plants take off, we have a much better supply!
It took us a while to find the right spot for our pots – not too hot, not too cold, and not too exposed to the weather…
Oh and we found speaking nicely to our basil made a difference too!
Love Basil and Sage…
