What is Pole Dance Fitness and what are its benefits?
Pole Dance Fitness can be described as many things including fitness, dance and art. It is the art of learning and combining pole “tricks” with floor movement and developing that into a style of dance. Pole Dance Fitness is an all over body workout that can be used to develop muscle growth and stamina, increase core stability, build a greater range of flexibilityand increase joint mobility. It is both a cardiovascular workout and a muscular one. Its benefits are endless and not limited to just physical in nature but also mental and emotional health. We find many clients find a sense of empowerment through the realisation that they can achieve things they never imagined.
How did you get involved with Pole Dance Fitness?
I actually just went along to a studio interview at Adelaide’s first studio. Pole Dance Fitness was very young in age then and the style was very different to what I teach today. I was intrigued by the ability to use strength and dance and combine the two. 5 years ago I felt the need to be able to take Pole further into the mainstream and teach others of the benefits so I decided to open my own studio.
How did that affect your life and what did / does it bring to your life today?
It certainly changed my life! If you asked me 12 years ago if I would be a full time professional in Pole Dance Fitness I would have laughed at you. Pole Dance Fitness has filled my life substance. I suffered quite badly with anxiety in my teenage years and into early adulthood and pole helped me to mend virtually all of those issues. It helped me to become confident in myself as well as nourish some personal professional dreams which I had. The Pole studio itself provides an array of challenges. Learning to run a small business has been challenging but being responsible for the growth of so many students and their dreams has been the real reward. The main reason I opened a studio was to provide people with a community centre as such to share our passions for this art form. The studio is certainly a full time job and I wouldn’t change that for the world.
What ranges of clients participate in Pole Dance Fitness?
We have women and men participating in classes from the ages of 15-60. There is a wide range of reasons that people take up Pole Dance from fitness through to meeting people. But the reason everyone stays is because pole is always challenging and the rewards are endless. Every time a student achieves a new move there is a sense of accomplishment and pride and this never ends.
In what way does this discipline influence wellbeing and help others – what do your clients say?
There are many reasons for this. The main one being the sense of accomplishment I spoke of before. Students are achieving things from day 1. Pole Dance Fitness allows people to explore their own fitness and their body’s capabilities in an environment that is comfortable and non judgemental. People can find gyms very intimidating; the Pole Fitness environment differs because it is extremely neutral. You are in a class and level with people who are also new to the fitness so you eliminate the feeling of not being good enough and as well as the feelings of being judged.
One of the most amazing things that come out of pole is the increase of self confidence. We have women start Pole Dance Fitness wearing long pants and not wanting to look into a mirror and in no time at all those same women are wearing shorts and feeling comfortable in their own skin. We see the most uncomfortable and unconfident women completely change their outlook, these women are then embracing who they and some are even performing for their classes and even in front of a crowd.
I have seen and spoken to women in depth about how it has helped them with depression. The Pole Boutique and its community have given them a place where they feel safe to be themselves and to share their journeys with other like minded people.
