The gem within the story…

What stories and gems are you sitting on?

The other day I had the privilege of the most engaging conversation with one of my students…

I say a privilege because it was through a real conversation that I found a gem.

Having just arrived in Adelaide from a European country without a command of English just 8 months earlier, he had already completed a Certificate IV qualification and was well on his way to a diploma.

The gem was not only the amazing feat of his studies. It was so much more…

He had a dream and the dream was big…

to become a champion body builder and through that become a speaker to share his story and inspire others.

And he is only 22 years of age!

Wow!

Without that conversation I would never have known what lied within that young man.

He would have remained a student in the back row wanting to complete his studies.

He is so much more…

He has a powerful story around the hardship he faced in his country as a child growing up and the challenges he overcame and the future dreams he has for the remainder of his family who still remain.

And who would have thought, body building, given his slight appearance as a youngster!

This conversation uplifted me for days and so much so I am writing about it today…

I am so much the richer for giving him the time that lead him to share his story so generously.

Taking the time, rather than rushing off to do another of those ‘things to do’ on the list – was a great lesson.

Taking the time, built greater understanding and compassion…

And more than that it felt uplifting, enjoyable and satisfying…

My lesson to me… Slow down, discover and enjoy the stories, enjoy the gems…

Everyone has an amazing story – survival, strength, passion, compassion, adventure, persistence

So… what stories can you discover from others?

Having rich conversations can be a great thing for anyone especially when going through cancer or supporting someone through cancer…

It can often move us away from our own pain and discomfort and become the break we need.

Something we all can do that can be absolutely rewarding…

With love,

Tricia
